How to find your vocal range

Your vocal range is the span from your lowest to your highest comfortable note. Sing a slide down to your lowest note and up to your highest, and measure both — or use our free online vocal range test.

Step by step

Warm up gently for a few minutes. Hum or sing "ah" sliding down until the note becomes unclear — that is your low end. Slide up until it strains — stop just before. Note both pitches.

Typical ranges by voice type

Approximate guides: bass E2–E4, baritone A2–A4, tenor C3–C5, alto F3–F5, mezzo-soprano A3–A5, soprano C4–C6. Many singers sit between types.

Range is not the whole story

Where your voice sounds best (tessitura) matters more than the extreme notes. Training usually extends range and, more importantly, makes the middle easier.
